UCSFMC Recognized as a Leader in Sustainability

picWhile the competition was fierce this year, UCSF Medical Center and Benioff Childrens Hospital once again was awarded the prestigious Top 25 Environmental Excellence Award offered by Practice Greenhealth, the nation’s leading health care community dedicated to transforming health care worldwide.  This award reflects UCSF’s commitment to reducing its environmental footprint and becoming a leader in the global movement for environmental health and justice. The Top 25 Environmental Excellence Award is Practice Greenhealth’s highest honor for hospitals. Selected from the Greenhealth Partner for Change Award applicants, these 25 hospitals are leading the industry with innovation in sustainability, demonstrating superior programs and illustrating how sustainability is entrenched in their culture.

Dan Henroid, Director, Nutrition & Food Services and Sustainability Officer for the UCSF Medical Center (UCSFMC) and Yelena Libova, a registered nurse in the Neurological ICU and past sustainability award winner, attended a Gala Dinner and Awards Ceremony at the Clean Med conference held in Dallas, TX on May 19.

UCSF received several other awards, including two Practice Greenhealth  2016 Environmental Excellence awards in the categories of climate and green building.  The Climate Circle highlights visionary hospitals taking the lead on tracking and measurement of CO2 emissions and overall climate program development. Hospitals in this Circle demonstrate an understanding of the health impacts of climate change and are taking action to mitigate those impacts and educate their staff and communities on playing a supporting role.  The Green Building Circle is presented to hospitals that have demonstrated LEED and other green building achievements over the past five years. These hospitals emphasize policies that show a commitment to LEED-level construction standards for all major new builds or renovations. UCSFMC’s achievements in this category include energy and water efficiency, safer materials, regional sourcing, integration of nature and other mechanisms to create high-performance healing environments.

UCSF also won the Greening the OR Recognition Award for its efforts to reduce waste in the OR.

Some of the accomplishments UCSFMC was recognized for include:

*  Installing 16 new electric vehicle charging stations;
*  Reaching 30% waste diversion;
*  Recycling, composting and waste reduction programs;
*  Sustainable food purchasing of 26%;
