Telecommuting at UCSF:  One Strategy for LivingGreen

TelecommuteDid you know UCSF encourages telecommuting from home offices to create a supportive work environment? 

According to a recent post on GreenBiz.com, teleworking can “save office expenses while significantly cutting environmental emissions and paper consumption.  The green benefits of teleworking are undisputed: cleaner air, lower operating costs, and increased efficiency, for starters. Assuming a 40-mile roundtrip commute, each employee allowed to work from home saves the company—and the planet—40,000 pounds of CO2 emissions annually. And that’s just for one day telecommuting per week.”

Telecommuting is a voluntary work arrangement in which an eligible employee with approval “works one or more days each work week from home instead of commuting to a work place.”  Telecommuting is assessed and approved by management on a case-by-case basis.  While not appropriate in all situations, UCSF’s Guidelines and Procedures for Telecommuting outline the process for proposing a telecommuting arrangement.
