Presidio Students Investigate the Bottom Line for UCSF Sustainability Work Groups

Presidio Graduate School (PGS) students have provided expertise to analyze some of UCSF’s most complex sustainability problems. In Fall 2013 UCSF will again be offering experiential learning opportunities in the topics of sustainable food service, air travel, land management and green chemistry for industrial cleaning. UCSF was also delighted with the Presidio Graduate School announcement that Paul Hawken, one of the most respected and widely read sustainable business leaders of our time, has joined the Presidio faculty.  Paul has written seven books including four national bestsellers.  The Next Economy (Ballantine 1983), Growing a Business (Simon and Schuster 1987), and The Ecology of Commerce (HarperCollins 1993) and Blessed Unrest (Viking, 2007).  He will co-teach Principles of Sustainable Management and will direct a new book and research project called Drawdown, a collaboratively-produced and interactive encyclopedia of off-the-shelf climate change solutions.

In 2003, Presidio pioneered the field of sustainable management education with 22 students and a handful of faculty. Today, Presidio has an accomplished team of over 40 faculty and staff, 250 students, and a global reputation. They offer three degree programs — MBA, MPA, and a Dual MBA/MPA — as well as an Executive Certificate, all in sustainable management. They have more than 500 business and public administration alumni.

Students usually work on UCSF projects as a team. Projects are generally developed and guided by a UCSF project sponsor, typically a UCSF staff or faculty member with content expertise in a sustainability topic area.  In most cases, the project sponsor is working directly in alignment with the ten sustainability work groups.
