What is Recycling?
Recycling is the process of taking already produced items and using their elements: paper, metal, glass, plastic, and aluminum, in order to make other products.

The following can be Recycled at UCSF

  • Paper cups (ex. coffee cup)
  • Paper milk & juice cartons
  • Aseptics (soymilk & soup cartons, juice boxes)
  • Aluminum Cans & Foil
  • Paper (staples + paper clips okay)
  • Plastic & Glass Bottles / Jars
  • Plastic Tubs + Lids
  • Cardboard
  • CDs and Diskettes
  • Pipette Tip Boxes (clean)
  • Reagent bottles (dry)
  • Rigid plastics

Rules to keep in mind:

  • Plastic that retains it’s shape is recyclable.

Single Stream Recycling

At UCSF, we follow a Single Stream Recycling program. This allows you to place ALL recyclable materials into your blue recycle bin - no need to have a separate bin for bottles and cans.

Sign Up to Take the Recology Tour Below!
The UCSF Recycling & Waste Reduction program in collaboration with Recology is happy to offer a FREE tour of Recology’s Commercial Facilities. This tour will show you were your material goes when it leaves your bin. You will have a chance to see the recycling process, the solid waste transfer station, public disposal area, hazardous waste drop off/process, and the artist in residency program behind the scenes at Recology.

Who: Any UCSF student, faculty, or staff.

When: 4th Thursday of every month from 10am – 2:15pm.
(Every 4th Thursday of a month with the exception of April, November, and December)

You can become an exceptional recycler by looking for ways to improve your office or lab waste, recycling, and compost.

We encourage all UCSF faculty, staff and students to learn to sort your waste.
